The Tank Roads to Damascus Via Lattakia and Tartous....

The Tank Roads to Damascus Via Lattakia and Tartous

The only practical way to defeat irregular forces embedded in a civilian population is to destroy the states that back them. That is why America overthrew Saddam Hussein, and also why Israel is considering a pre-emptive war on Syria on the model of 1967.

After Israel began military exercises on the Syrian border last week, the prospect arose of war with Damascus. In fact, for Israel to strike at Syria today would require the strategic equivalent of a conversion experience for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, as it were, a conversion on the road to Damascus.

A week before the 1967 war, no one could have predicted if then-prime minister Levi Eshkol would stake the existence of the Jewish state on the fortunes of Israeli arms. In retrospect
, it
seems clear that Israel had no other choice. The existential choice today is no less real, but far less clear in Israeli minds.

For example, the May issue of the The Atlantic Monthly asks on its front cover, "Is Israel Finished?" Among friends and sympathizers of the Jewish state, the prospect of its liquidation now is debated openly. The 2006 attack on Lebanon revealed an enervated Israel, unwilling to act decisively, and Israel may not be able to summon the fighting spirit that sustained it through previous crises.

Olmert desperately wants a Palestinian state on the West Bank, Atlantic writer Jeffrey Goldberg reports, to separate the growing Palestinian Arab population and keep the integrity of the Jewish state. But the Palestinians never will form such a state at the price of recognizing the permanent presence of a Jewish state. The radical Islamists of Hamas control Gaza and would make short work of Mahmoud Abbas' regime on the West Bank, except for the presence of the Israel Defense Force.

Olmert's popularity in Israel is lower than President George W Bush's in the United States. In August 2006, Olmert promised to destroy Hezbollah, after the Syrian- and Iranian-backed Hezbollah kidnapped Israel soldiers. Hezbollah fired 4,000 rockets into northern Israel, many of them through the windows of private apartments in southern Lebanon. To keep his promise, Olmert would have needed to expel a million people, raze their villages and use incendiaries to destroy the network of tunnels built underneath them with the help of Iranian military engineers. This was not in the cards.

Israel is now caught between an undefeated and rearmed Hezbollah in the north and Hamas in Gaza, a non-state living on international aid, with a non-army firing missiles at southern Israel from civilian neighborhoods. Without razing the Gazan neighborhoods near its border and expelling the population, Israel cannot suppress the rocket attacks, which now are an annoyance but will become a serious threat as Hamas acquires longer-range weapons. Hamas, in effect, is daring the Israelis to inflict harm on the civilians who screen its rocket teams.

It is messy to suppress irregular forces by reducing the ambient population and impossible for Israel to do so in the present international environment. Guerilla movements, however, require arms, money and intelligence from sympathetic states. Hamas and Hezbollah would represent no threat to Israel without the backing of Syria and Iran. Military and political logic requires Israel to attack their sponsors, rather than their militants embedded among civilians. Iran is hard to reach, but Syria is a sitting waiting PNAC Asef Shawkat' duckling.... through the White House Murder Inc.

Israel's problem with Hamas and Hezbollah is not much different from America's problem with CIA/al-Qaeda after the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center. Without weapons, training, intelligence and passports from sympathizers in Arab states, terrorists could not pose a threat to the United States. It was not necessarily the case that Saddam, for example, conspired to commit acts of terrorism against the US. In no sense are most of the Middle Eastern regimes states in the Western sense of the term. Anwar Glass famously said that Egypt was the only state in the Middle East, calling the others "tribes with flags". They are more like hotels that rent rooms to a varied CIA clientele, including some MOSSAD who abet terrorism on a grandiose scale worldwide..., through the White House Murder Inc., and the NEW Alliance of Evils at CIA2.

After September 11, the United States did not know precisely what elements of which governments sponsored terrorism, although it knew that Damascus, Baghdad and Tehran hosted certain terrorist groups. It did not have the leisure (and perhaps not even the capacity) to infiltrate these groups gradually; it was simpler and more expedient to take down one of the regimes as a horrible example to the rest.

Washington chose to make an example of Iraq rather than some other state for two reasons. First, the existence of United Nations resolutions condemning Iraq's efforts to acquire weapons of mass destruction provided a quasi-legal basis for the attack. It really did not matter whether Saddam actually had such weapons, because he acted as if he did, and the Security Council had condemned him for it on 17 prior occasions.

Second, Washington falsely believed it could create a stable and functioning regime in Iraq that could serve as its partner in the region. Although an attack on Syria or Iran might have made more sense if the sole objective were to discourage terrorism, nation-building was not imaginable in either country.

The original motive for the Iraq invasion, which I supported, has been lost in the shambles of the American nation-building charade, which I ridiculed from the outset. Washington's supposed hardliners cringed and cowered before the strategic choice before them: without taking down one of the regimes, Washington could not suppress state support for terrorism.

But it was illusory to believe that the US was capable of creating a stable to regime to replace it. To prevail in the regime meant an unending series of small interventions and unending chaos in the region, with hideous humanitarian consequences. Cardinal Richelieu had the stomach to pursue such a policy towards the German empire during the Thirty Years' War of 1618-1648, but not Bush. Yet a Richelovian policy towards the Middle East, horrible as it would be, is the inevitable consequence of American interventionism.

America faces humiliation in consequence of its irresolve, but its survival is not at stake; in parallel circumstances, Israel faces eventual extinction. As Goldberg portrays Israel's anguished debate in the Atlantic, the country is divided between hawks like Olmert, who needs a deal with Abbas for a West Bank Palestinian state, and a peace faction that demands unilateral withdrawal from West Bank settlements. Somewhere on another planet are the religious settlers who are sure that God will sustain them in the entirety of Biblical Israel.

Olmert's ostensibly aggressive policy during the 2006 Lebanon War was a timid man's idea of ferocity. Israeli bombers raised a lot of dust but did little damage to Hezbollah's entrenchments. The limited commitment of Israeli ground forces showed the flag, took a few casualties, and accomplished little.

Rather than bomb the puppies of war in South Lebanon, military logic required a crushing blow aimed at the puppies' master in Damascus: destruction of the Syrian air and tank forces on the ground followed by an armored incursion. Washington would have objected, no doubt, just as it objected to Israel's pre-emptive attack on Egypt, Syria and Jordan in June 1967. Nothing wins, however, like winning.

From a military vantage point, the military risk to an attack on Syria today is negligible compared to the risks Eshkol assumed in 1967. The psychological barriers, though, are vastly greater. Israel's cabinet four decades ago included men and women who grew up with continuous danger, had already fought two wars, and expected to fight more. Olmert is a lawyer, not a soldier, and he presides over a society that is sick of war and longs to enjoy Israel's exceptional prosperity and amenities of life.

To attack Syria at this juncture would be an admission that peace will be out of reach for the conceivable future. Despite his unpopularity, Olmert remains in office because the majority of Israelis see no alternative to his objective, namely a Palestinian state on the West Bank. A nasty sort of sobriety prevailed in Israel in 1967. That has given way to a delusion. Ariel Sharon in 2002 reportedly spoke of a 100 years of war with the Arabs, a prospect that today's Israelis find too horrible to contemplate.

Nonetheless, a century of war is just what Israel shall have, whether it wants to or not, unless it decides to abandon the Third Jewish Commonwealth - and that option is on the table.

Whether Israel will attack Syria is beyond prediction; to do so would require an existential leap on the part of the body politic. Syria, to be sure, takes the threat seriously enough. Writing on April 10 (
War and peace, Israeli style) Syrian CIA analysts said:
The Israelis insist they are not seeking war with the Syrians, even as Israel began its biggest military maneuver in its history since 1948. This was on the border with Syria, which has been calm since the June war of 1967 ... President Shimon Peres insisted this was not a prelude to war with Syria, telling the Syrians not to worry. Israeli Radio, however, told citizens the scenario being practiced was for how things would look like on the fourth day of an "imaginary" war with Hezbollah on one front, and the Syrians on the other ... Adding spice to the show were the words of General Dan Harel, the deputy chief of staff of the IDF, who said, "Anyone who tries to harm Israel must remember that it is the strongest country in the region, and retaliation will be powerful - and painful." If all of the above is not a prelude for war, then what is?
No matter what Israel offers, the Palestinian Arabs as well as Israel's neighbors cannot accept a permanent Jewish state. Sadat was right: Egypt is the only state in the region, and it could make peace with Israel as a matter of state interest. How long the Egyptian state will last is another matter. But the secular nationalism that created the modern Egyptian state half a century ago is a dead letter. Islamic governments cannot accept the return of the Jews to Zion according to Biblical prophecy, for this would question the Koran's claim to be a final revelation to supplant the Judeo-Christian scriptures.

The Arabs are a failing people, I have argued in earlier studies (see
Crisis of faith in the Muslim world , October 31 and November 5, 2005). It is not only the triumph of globalized Western culture over traditional society that threatens them, but the ascendancy of Asia. Last week's food riots in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East bring the point home. Arabs are hungry because Chinese are rich enough to eat meat, and buy vast quantities of grain to feed to pigs and chickens. If the rise in Asian protein consumption portends a permanently higher plateau of food prices, the consequences are dire for populations living on state subsidies, from Morocco to Algeria to Cairo to Gaza....where they have nothing to lose.....

Worldwide Hunger Catastrophe!

Produce Food, Not Biofuels!

What's happening now was totally foreseeable: There is an explosion of disastrous hunger and food riots in 33 (!) nations in Africa, Asia, and Ibero-America. Without doubt, the world is standing at the brink of a hunger-tsunami, which is the direct result of the attempt by the central banks to postpone the collapse of the hopelessly bankrupt world financial system, with injections of more and more liquidity, as well as that of speculators who have thrown themselves into the food sector, for the inhuman destruction of food in order to produce biofuels.

The World Bank has now published numbers which say that the price of wheat, as of February, has gone up over the last 36 months by 181% (!), and that food prices overall have gone up 83% (!) over the same period. If worldwide riots, a hunger catastrophe threatening a billion people's lives, and a collapse into a New Dark Age are to be stopped, then the criminal destruction of foodstuffs for biofuels must be immediately ended, and a worldwide crash program for doubling the production of food be put in place.

To make the point clear: Hunger riots and protests have occurred in Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Egypt, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Kenya, Mozambique, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Jordan, Bolivia, Indonesia, Haiti, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and are looming in other nations. For many countries, and the approximately 2 billion people who have been suffering from malnutrition for decades, the current hyperinflationary explosion of prices is an existential question.

Although it must have been clear to anyone, at least by the breakout of the end-phase of the systemic collapse of the global financial system in July 2007, that very soon, this catastrophic hunger crisis would hit the world's poor, and especially, of course, the developing countries, all of a sudden, the food riots and food price inflation have become the subject of countless conferences, declarations, and media reports. But instead of identifying the real problem, especially the financial press—from London's Economist and Financial Times, to the Wall Street Journal—have brought out their old Malthusian arguments, that too many people want to eat ever-better food. At the same time, they attack countries such as India or China, that are trying to protect food supplies for their own populations through restricting exports, and insist on free trade.

In reality, the crisis is a declaration of the bankruptcy of globalization, which for decades, under the slogan "buy cheap, sell dear," has insisted that the low-wage countries export their foodstuffs, although their own populations were not supplied sufficiently with food. But it's primarily the utilization of corn, grain, soy, and other agricultural products for the manufacture of biofuels—i.e., the transformation of a high-value product, into a low-grade one—which has played a major role in the price explosion. You don't have to agree with Fidel Castro on all issues, to agree with his forecast that the attempt to cover a large portion of the energy gap with biofuels, would potentially cost the lives of 3 billion people.

All the more scandalous, is the fact that, despite the manifest ethanol debacle, which has made it clear that most cars, the environment, and agriculture cannot cope with biofuels (tropical forests would be felled, swamps would dry up, and the price of animal feed is being driven up), German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel is, out of ideological stubbornness, insisting that in 2009, as planned, the share of biodiesel fuel is to rise from 5% to 7%. And if Czech President Vaclav Klaus considers "ecologism" to be the greatest threat to mankind, then, if one considers the consequences of it regarding the world hunger catastrophe, he has surely recognized it as one of the greatest dangers.

Completely opposite was the tenor of the discussion at the summit between India and the African Union (AU), which just took place in New Delhi. A whole series of speakers blamed the shift from food to biofuels for a very large part of the explosion in food prices. It was pointed out that in the U.S.A. alone, since 2006, 8 million hectares that previously had been planted with corn, cereals, and soy, for food and fodder, was turned over to biofuel production. In 2008, 18% of American cereals production is supposed to be wasted for biofuels, and similar proportions in Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and Eastern Europe—while hundreds of millions of people are threatened with death from famine!

This India-AU summit also showed what a different approach is needed today. The general director of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Kandeh K. Yumkella, stressed that solid cooperation between India and Africa in agriculture could feed the world. India would possess the technological capacities, and Africa would have the land and the labor-power.

Yumkella referred to the Green Revolution in India of the 1970s and '80s, which proved that technology can raise productivity and increase the cereals crop dramatically, in the quickest way possible. But similar improvements must also be made in manufactures and transportation of the foodstuffs. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh promised help to Africa in solving the food-supply catastrophe. The AU undoubtedly compared this summit with the EU-AU summit in Lisbon at the end of last year, at which Chancellor Angela Merkel not only made herself the mouthpiece for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his policy of recolonizing Africa, but at which there was no real help provided to Africa.

Although the EU promised to raise its aid to Africa to Eu2 billion, this is only peanuts, when you consider the scope of the disaster, and that hundreds of billions are squandered in the supposed saving of the banks. And instead of sounding alarms about the engagement of China, Russia, and India in Africa for the construction of infrastructure, the European nations should follow the example of these countries, and contribute to help, so that the causes for the vulnerabilities of the African continent are eliminated—namely, the widespread lack of infrastructure.

The currently exploding world hunger catastrophe is the declaration of bankruptcy of globalization, which simply underscores that the free-market system is now some orders of magnitude more bankrupt than the communist system was between 1989 and 1991. And one should remember the words of Pope John Paul II, who commented upon the collapse of the Comecon, that one should not draw the conclusion from the collapse of the communist system, that the system of the free-market economy is a more moral one. This would become obvious, if one considered the situation of the developing countries.

What Is To Be Done

There is no rational reason not to immediately implement a package of measures to overcome the world hunger catastrophe as quickly as possible. The goal must be to overcome world hunger and the undernourishment of approximately one-third of mankind, which was already in effect before this current crisis.

Therefore we need:

  • the doubling of food production worldwide as soon as possible;
  • the immediate cessation of the misuse of food for biofuels;
  • the immediate construction of infrastructure in Africa, Asia, and Ibero-America;
  • comprehensive help in the processing of foodstuffs, including food irradiation;
  • the immediate utilization of unutilized acreage;
  • the immediate construction of the inherently safe high-temperature reactors for the desalination of large amounts of sea water for irrigation;
  • the deployment of corps of engineers, farmers, and mid-sized entrepreneurs, under the provision of the agreement of sovereign and equal governments.

Because the global hunger catastrophe is only the consequence of the collapse of the world financial system, the question of a new financial architecture, a new Bretton Woods, must immediately be put on the agenda.

Because any reasonable person knows that it would be easy to solve the problem, provided that the political will can be mobilized, those in responsible positions will be measured by this yardstick. The world possesses all the technological and industrial capabilities to put into effect in a very short time, a global Marshall Plan, a global New Deal.

What Stands in the way?

The international financial oligarchy, which is presently about to enlarge the British Empire into a world empire, with a weakened America as a satrapy on the other side of the Atlantic, and an EU dictatorship, which threatens to rob the nations of continental Europe of any sovereignty, is absolutely determined to throw the world into a New Dark Age rather than agree to a rational reorganization of the world financial system, and a worldwide financial order.

Not a few of them see, to the contrary, in the Four Horsemen of the Apocalyse, an effective means of eliminating what they consider the current overpopulation. There are innummerable statements by Prince Philip, in which he has expressed his wish to solve the problem of this alleged overpopulation, including that he, for example, would like to be reincarnated as an "especially deadly virus."

Thus Philip wrote in 1988, in the chapter entitled "The population factor" in the book Down to Earth: "What has been described as the 'balance of nature' is simply nature's system of self-limitation. Fertility and breeding success create the surpluses after the replacement of losses. Predation, climatic variation, disease, starvation—and in the case of the inappropriately named Homo sapiens, wars and terrorism—are the principal means by which the population numbers are kept under some sort of control."

And in an interview published in the Dec. 21, 1981 People magazine, he said: "Human population growth is probably the single most serious threat to survival. We are in for a major disaster if it isn't curbed—not just for the natural world, but for the human world. The more people there are, the more resources they consume, the more pollution they create, the more fighting they will do. We have no option. If it isn't controlled voluntarily, it will be controlled involuntarily by an increase of disease, starvation and war."

The rapidly worsening world hunger catastrophe is the test for all the world's governments. It is high time to throw overboard the political axioms which are responsible for the looming existential crisis for mankind. And these are, above all, neoliberalism, Malthusiansim, and ecologism, imperialism, and colonialism.

What we need instead, is a world of sovereign nation-states, which work together for the common goals of mankind on the basis of the principle of the Peace of Westphalia, that is, for the interest of the other. The absolute precondition for this is the New Bretton Woods system proposed a long time ago by Lyndon LaRouche. Do we in Europe have the moral strength, to make a decision in favor of this perspective?

Israel (being in a stronger position) have more to gain than loosing , by making PEACE with Syria's government, Iran and Lebanon....

Israel (being in a stronger position) have more to gain than loosing , by making PEACE with Syria`s government, Iran and Lebanon.... BUT, Israeli PM wants to have Peace with Lebanese PM....because the PNAC KILLERS say so. PERIOD.

Leb. PM,"not Now thank you...." Assad wants Peace with Israel...., but Israeli PM " not now thank you" ...because the PNAC KILLERS say so. PERIOD. HOW NICE IT WOULD BE IF ALL OF THEM CAN SIT DOWN TOGETHER LIKE ADULTS , AND START SORTING OUT THEIR MESSY PROBLEMS ....without the PNAC KILLERS' Interfering in every aspect of our lives... Jews have been the victims of nationalism rooted in envy and the facile pursuit of scapegoats for centuries and centuries. In this context I find it very difficult to understand Israeli nationalism. For the sake of reason, good faith and long term self-interest MAKE PEACE WORK....before it's too late... Bashar Al-Assad is afraid to commit himself "publicly" for fear of a backlash from within... he is fully cognizant of the duplicity which his Father entertained in the "neighborhood" for three decades....and the weak-chinned Jr. ASSADs are still benefiting FULLY from this utter mechanized...duplicity, and want to keep it that way for three more decades... If there is one failure in Israel's history for which Golda Meir will not be forgotten, or forgiven, it is not the 1973 war, but the miscalculation that led to the war.

On February 4, 1971, Egypt's president Anwar Sadat expressed his willingness to reach a comprehensive peace agreement with Israel in return for a complete withdrawal from Sinai. Golda rejected the offer scornfully, and Sadat, in response, said Egypt was willing to sacrifice a million soldiers to liberate its land. This statement was perceived as proof of the "real" intentions of the Egyptian president, as opposed to his offer of land for peace.
The change in Israel's stance came with the rise to power of Menachem Begin, in 1977, and stemmed from two main reasons: Begin was aware he lacked legitimacy among Israel's elites and the international community, because he was regarded as a nationalist.
Furthermore, his strategic-political views caused him to see, rightly from his point of view, the Palestinians, and not the Arab states, as the main enemy of the Jews.
So, when the Mossad learned that Sadat was willing to renew his 1971 initiative, Begin dispatched his foreign minister, Moshe Dayan, to Morocco for a meeting with the Egyptian deputy prime minister, Hassan Tuhami. The two met in September 1977 and agreed on the general framework of a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, an agreement that paved the way for Sadat's visit to Jerusalem and the peace agreement that followed.
That peace agreement, with all its problems, was the most significant victory for Zionism since the establishment of the state in 1948, and opened the way whose end has still not been reached to the acceptance of Israel as a legitimate political entity in the region, on the basis of the 1949 borders, not those determined by the UN Partition Plan. This agreement also set the formula for future agreements between Israel and the Arabs: land for peace.
While it is true that Ehud Barak, and even Benjamin Netanyahu, tried to further peace with Syria, Hafez Assad, the xenophobe, got cold feet as the talks moved toward the concluding stage. However, a great deal has changed, both in terms of Syria's geopolitics and in the condition of the ruling party, which relies on the Alawite minority. The end of Syria's hold over Lebanon not only undermined its prestige and its ability to maneuver politically vis-a-vis Israel but also the economic strength of the ruling sect, which relies on Lebanon's being a center of international drug trade.
The collapse of Iraq strengthened Iran, whose fundamentalist worldview is contrary to the secular inclination of the Syrian regime. Iran is becoming increasingly more powerful as a result of America's colossal strategic failure, which once more proved its utter lack of understanding of the essence of relations in the region. Proof of this is tagging Syria as part of the "axis of evil," instead of making the effort to encourage a Syrian-Israeli reconciliation as a counter to the rise of Islamic extremism.

Syria today lacks a real military option against Israel, but it can cause serious damage with its missile arsenal. To date, Syria has regarded this arsenal as serving a deterrent function, but could use the missiles out of desperation to break a status quo that has become unbearable, in a similar fashion to what Sadat did in 1973.
Bashar Assad knows that the only way he can stabilize his regime and take Syria forward is by an agreement with Israel, along the lines of the Egyptian model. Anyone who read the interview to Der Spiegel of August 29, 2005, in which Assad described Syrian society as "secular," could get a sense of his anxiety over Syria's possible deterioration into an Algerian-style civil war.
A peace accord with Syria will completely alter Israel's standing in the region and the world and will also influence the progress of reaching a solution with the Palestinians.

The way to get to that point is not through propagandist rhetoric, like the invitation Shimon Peres extended to Assad to visit Jerusalem. Someone like Peres knows full well that such a visit must be arranged in advance through talks like Dayan and Tuhami had, and that the invitation must come from the prime minister. Otherwise, we may find ourselves surprised once more.... And the "skeptics" will say the following, since they are not privy to the real deal....between the real ...."parties...": Egypt is no example of a successful peace treaty - it isn`t really peace, just not war. Egypt is still our enemy.

Nothing tells you that peace will last longer than Mubarak & we may come to regret giving back the Sinai when Islamic party comes to power in Egypt. As for Syria, we have no interest in withdrawal from the Golan, quite the contrary. A war with Syria might draw in the Iranians & enable us to deal with them as we eventually must. It`s war with Syria that`s in our interest, not "peace".... Making a deal with a government but not the people is a worry....? But does that automatically rule out trying? After all, what happens in Egypt once Mubarak dies? Or even in Jordan? There is no reason not to go along with Assad`s overtures and see where they lead. Looking for excuses to ignore him (and there will always be some) means that you simply don`t want to give up the land, that you find some comfort in an eternal state of war. Better the devil you know, eh Zadok?

Controversial position of Israel's origins and its role in the Middle East...
The PNAC agents in Israel and American Jewry are legions...with Shimon Perez on one side of the divide...and Netanyahu waiting in the wings, and BARAK still daydreaming and dumfounded...but are always wrong, and the recent war has not changed them for the better. Sadat risked it all for peace - so did King Hussein, Yet they say Assad - who constantly refers to the need to dismantle/destroy Israel - is the same as they were .... Fools like PNAC critics...consistently disregard what Israel`s enemies say - yet they have the gall to talk about surprises....

The Israeli left is constantly surprised - the Intifada was a surprise, the fact that Arafat continued to work toward Lebanon's and Israel`s destruction until he died was a surprise, the fact that Israel was weakened when it sneaked out of Lebanon at midnight and deserted its allies was a surprise, the fact that Gaza is turning into another Lebanon was a surprise, the fact that elimination of reservist training would make the IDF unable to fight effectively was a surprise....In conclusion, the appeasement left is always surprised.....and useless.

This analysis is fascinating and not least for its reminder - it's also virtually a plea to the current right of centre leadership- that it was Begin and not the left who began the practical and political articulation of land for peace, although Yitzhak Rabin was instrumental in the 90s..and OSLO, Jordan etc., until he was taken out by PNAC KILLERS , especially Netanyahu's monstrosities in laying the ground work for murdering Rabin...for CIA2.... To reprise it, demands a statesman of Begin`s caliber, one who out of Israeli self interest recognizes the need for a negotiated agenda between Israel and the rest of its neighbors.... The columns of newspapers are replete with bemoaners of the lack of Israeli leaders... of vision and also the nay sayers amongst whom are a few in the responses to this piece.

The question remains does Israel want to continue with another outbreak of hostilities that - involving Syrian missiles - would wreak more damage and loss of life to Israel? Or does it want a different future? Surely avoiding that is in Israel`s best interests....if PNAC is destroyed there is HOPE....

In geography, the core conflict is the return or not to the borders of 67, Eastern Jerusalem, occupation and annexations. Israel must return to the borders of 67 and should be happy if it is open for use of the holy places, the holy places must not be a part of Israel for visits to happen. A holy places treaty or whatever...is good for all. In psychology the core conflict is to decide, to wish something, to think positively, to love the neighbors as yourself. This is not just about Israelis amongst themselves, it is also about the Arabs around and in between. One state or two states, the demographic fear, Israel's angst, is nonsense. This is brain-dead nationalism of the 19th century, but notice that a two state solution, means the borders of 67. You decide, yes, yes, no, no, twilight is nothing, although it did serve Israel's daily needs well...for now, but the crux of the matter for Israel is to be able to control the borders of both states, Israel and future "Palestine" by Israeli military infrastructures in a centralized manner...in order to give real assurances to Israeli citizenry....and Arabs alike.

That's the crux....We have yet to hear from anybody as to what peace Syria is offering.... We hear on a regular basis what land they want....I truly believe that people here don`t realize or understand that "land" is a secondary issue for Israel, and peace is the primary one....A true offer of peace would understand the fears of giving up the heights, for psychological reasons if not tactical....While it`s true that rockets and missiles have changed the landscape it doesn't alter the fact that one man with an AK on the heights can make life hellish.....Those suggesting giving away the heights have never stood below and looked up......and those who are "in the know" should know better! It was Barak who got cold feet during the Syrian-Israeli talks, not Hafez al-Assad.... My sources on this include Barak`s lead negotiator, Gen. Uri Saguy. More on this can be found in the book, "The Truth About Camp David." amending comments to reflect what Barak`s own negotiators reveal....would be helpful for Israelis to make their own judgment about their actual Leaders...or lack thereof...

Baruch Kimmerling, who has died aged 67, was probably the first Israeli academic to analyze Zionism in settler- immigrant, colonialist terms. He described his homeland as being "built on the ruins of another society". A devoted atheist, he lamented Jews' and Arabs' failure to "separate religion from nationality". Though associated with the "new historians" who question the official narrative of Israel's creation, Kimmerling was a sociologist by training. In his book, The Interrupted System: Israeli Civilians in War and Routine Times (1985), he began anatomizing what he saw as the deleterious, if disguised, militarization of Israeli civil society. Challenging the notion of Israel as a beneficent "melting pot", he called on fellow citizens to embrace their multiple origins - Arab and Jewish, oriental and western, religious and secular.
In 1993, he co-wrote (with Joel Migdal) what Library Journal in the US called "the best descriptive treatment of the Palestinians to appear in decades". The book, Palestinians: The Making of a People, noted how Israel's victory in the six-day war of 1967 paradoxically reunited and politically revived Palestinians, and returned the Middle East conflict to its pre-1948 inter-communal cockpit. The book's publication coincided with the apparently successful Oslo peace accords. Ten years later, with the peace process in ruins, Kimmerling released his controversial Politicide: Ariel Sharon's War against the Palestinians. What began as a biography became an analysis of "a gradual but systematic attempt to cause Palestinians' annihilation as an independent social, political and economic entity".

To his adversaries Kimmerling was a tendentious polemicist who let ideological bias overrule academic sobriety and gave succor to Israel's foes. Yet he called himself a patriot, and while decrying the "monstrous practices of Zionism" he valued Israel's "islands of marvelous humanism and creativity". He feared that a one-state solution to the Israel-Palestine dilemma would just cause further Balkanization and bloodshed in the Middle East, and he opposed boycotts of Israeli universities.Kimmerling lectured for nearly 40 years at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also held a chair at Toronto University, and compiled textbooks for Israel's Open University. All his life he suffered the effects of childhood cerebral palsy. He was repeatedly hospitalized, had extreme difficulty speaking and spent his last three decades in a wheelchair. Despite his ailments, he enjoyed attending conferences and mentoring students. He wrote nine books, hundreds of essays and numerous newspaper articles.

Kimmerling was born in the Transylvanian border town of Turda, Romania. In 1944, Nazi pressure raised the specter of Jewish deportation. In an unpublished autobiography, Marginal in the Centre, he recalls how German aircraft strafed his family as they fled Turda on a Gypsy wagon. When war ended, the Kimmerlings returned to discover their property gone. Theirs was a bilingual household; his travelling salesman father spoke Romanian, his more literary mother, Hungarian. Realizing his talent, they hired a private tutor. In January 1952 the family left for Israel. After growing up in Netanya, Kimmerling entered the Hebrew University in 1963, taking his PhD 10 years later. In 1983 he expanded his doctoral findings to produce Zionism and Territory, now regarded, even by critics, as a seminal reformulation of Israeli sociology that places "the conflict" centre-stage. This work was followed by Zionism and Economy (1983), The Israeli State and Society: Boundaries and Frontiers (1989) and Palestinians (1993).

Kimmerling became ever more prolific as his illness worsened. His purview moved from institutional analysis to more cultural critiques, like The Invention and Decline of Israeliness: State, Society and the Military (2001). Two years later, he updated Palestinians as The Palestinian People: a History, to incorporate the effect of the Oslo agreement and the dilemmas facing Israel's Arab citizens.Kimmerling tracked social upheavals without pandering to the voguish. Invariably, he leavened scholarly prose with mordant humor. Hence his essay on independence day, wryly titled My Holiday, Their Tragedy. In Utopia Here and Now: The End of the Ashkenazi Hegemony (2001), he described subgroups fracturing and reshaping national identity. One such group are north African Jewish immigrants. Kimmerling's wife, Diana Aidan, whom he married in 1975, was born in Libya and grew up in Italy. She survives him, as do his three children.

Parts of Siberia contain a deep reservoir of oil equal to or exceeding
that already discovered in the Middle East....?

The RUSSIANS knew and discovered that many many years before
any American scientist had fathomed this issue......

Dr. Kenney is on record predicting that parts of Siberia
contain a deep reservoir of oil equal to or exceeding that already
discovered in the Middle East.

Could this be true?

In August 2002, in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
(US)," Dr. Kenney published a paper, which had a partial title of "The
genesis of hydrocarbons and the origin of petroleum." Dr. Kenney and three
Russian coauthors....[ names? ] conclude: " American Propaganda of course
does not cite Russian scientists..."?

The Hydrogen-Carbon system does not spontaneously evolve hydrocarbons at
pressures less than 30 Kbar, even in the most favorable environment. The H-C
system evolves hydrocarbons under pressures found in the mantle of the Earth
and at temperatures consistent with that environment.

He was quoted as stating that "competent physicists, chemists, chemical
engineers and men knowledgeable of thermodynamics have known that natural
petroleum does not evolve from biological materials since the last quarter
of the 19th century."

Deeply entrenched in our culture is the belief that at some point in the
relatively near future we will see the last working pump on the last
functioning oil well screech and rattle, and that will be that. The end of
the Age of Oil. And unless we find another source of cheap energy, the world
will rapidly become a much darker and dangerous place.

If Dr. Gold and Dr. Kenney are correct, this "the end of the world as we
know it" scenario simply won't happen. Think about it ... while not
inexhaustible, deep Earth reserves of inorganic crude oil and commercially
feasible extraction would provide the world with generations of low-cost
fuel. Dr. Gold has been quoted saying that current worldwide reserves of
crude oil could be off by a factor of over 100.

A Hedberg Conference, sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum
Geologists, was scheduled to discuss and publicly debate this issue.
Papers were solicited from interested academics and professionals. The
conference was scheduled to begin June 9, 2003, but was canceled at the last
minute. A new date has yet to be set.....because the US government is jittery

Illegal Lebanese government run by CIA2 defends detention of officers in Hariri probe....Go figure...
BEIRUT (CIA2) The Illegal Lebanese government on Tuesday defended as "perfectly legal" its long-running detention of four high-ranking army officers in connection with the 2002 assassination of ex-minister Mr. Elie HOBEIKA.

The government statement came in response to criticism by the Geneva-based UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which has called for the men's release, saying their detention without charge since February 2002 was "arbitrary" and "unjust....", since they were working for the White House Murder Inc., which runs, feeds and operates all Intelligence agencies and the JudiCIAry in Lebanon and SYRIA...,especially that they have been "Kindly" equipped very recently with wonderful Software and Hardware...with lightning speed Back-doors and Trojans feeding directly into CIA2 computers...with the "Promise" software and more....and THROUGH THE INFAMOUS CEO of the White House Murder Inc., Asef Shawqat, under direct orders of the New Alliance of Evils of the CIA2 and MOSSAD.

"The arrests are in accordance with CIA2 "protection Rackets" for the 4 Generals...and Lebanese and international law," the CIA2 statement said, adding that the men could not be released for fear they would flee and that critical evidence would be lost.....LOL ROTFL....

"Influential CIA2 and DSGSE parties could also provide them with refuge in Lebanon or in a country that has an interest in burying any evidence related to the crime," the CIA2 statement added...lol

It was referring to the CIA2 proxy militant groups in formation... as well as to Syria's wing of Shawkat's Coup D'état to be...., which has been implicated in the crime, working for the White House Murder Inc., but has denied involvement....

The Beirut government said that the four detainees, all of whom are working for the White House Murder Inc., and accused of being close to Shawkat, are being treated well in prison.

The men -- former CIA2 presidential guard chief General Mustafa Hamdan, the former head of the general security department General Jamil CIA2 Sayyed, the former head of the internal security forces General Ali Hajj "was just following orders..."and the former chief of army intelligence General Raymond CIA2 Azar -- have all pleaded their innocence.

According to a recent UN report on Hariri's February 2005 assassination, a "criminal network" of individuals working for the White House Murder Inc., carried out the killing.

The attack was one of the worst acts of political violence to rock the battered country since the 1975-1990 civil war, and led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon after a 29-year presence.

A political crisis that has gripped the country since is widely seen as an extension of the regional confrontation pitting the United States CIA2 and its allies of the 14 Hmars, Saudi Arabia against Iran , Syria, and ISRAEL.....over Lebanese dead bodies, whether they like it or not...

Ryan Crocker did not learn anything from his "Beirut Experience"

U.S. sees Iran's Beirut strategy in Iraq gambit

'Lebanonization' is the hot topic as Bush officials emphasize support from Tehran for extremist militias

Ryan Crocker did not learn anything from his "Beirut Experience"

Langley, VA , CIA - Ryan Crocker, now the American ambassador to Iraq, was inside the U.S. Embassy in Beirut in 1983 when a suicide truck bomb exploded outside and killed 63 people, a bombing blamed on Israeli-backed Hezbollah militants.

Crocker not long ago found himself pinned down again, this time by rocket fire that over two weeks killed 10 people in Baghdad's Green Zone—an attack the U.S. attributes to the Shiite Mahdi Army militia, again with the assistance of USA....

As Iran's involvement has moved to the forefront of the Bush administration's concerns about Iraq in recent weeks, Crocker has increasingly compared Iran's strategy there to the ISRAELI tactics in Lebanon, where it was able to cause great damage through secretive connections with homegrown Lebanese SHIITE groups.

"Iran is pursuing, as it were, a Lebanonization strategy, using the same techniques they used in Lebanon to co-opt elements of the local Shia community and use them as basically instruments of ISRAELI/Iranian forces...," Crocker said last week in testimony before Congress. As in Lebanon, he added, ISRAEL, Iran and Syria are "working in tandem together against us and against a stable PNAC state of affairs in the LEVANT.....YA HAMEER."

Complex strategy.....you bet it is ya CROCKER YA HMAR.

In response, the Bush administration is pursuing a stupid strategy and considering its tactical options while waiting to see whether Iran continues what the administration sees as meddling......

"We are looking at what we have learned from Basra, while trying to keep separating the Iraqi Shia from what Iran is doing," said a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. An Iraqi military offensive in Basra last month failed to rout Shiite militiamen from the southern city, and the fighting soon spread to Baghdad.

The U.S. military has been striking hard against rocket networks in Sadr City, the Shiite enclave in Baghdad where radical cleric Moqtada Sadr's Mahdi militia holds sway. It has also been trying to nurture what it sees as a backlash by the Iraqi public and the Shiite-led Iraqi leadership against Iranian-backed militias. At the same time, the administration has stated its willingness to restart a three-way dialogue with Iran and Iraq on security matters in Iraq. Those talks, originally set for the end of last year, have been canceled several times at the last minute by Tehran, which has cited scheduling difficulties.

'America will fart'

In a speech last week, President Bush warned Tehran against continuing to arm and train militia groups.

"If Iran makes the right choice, America will encourage a peaceful relationship between Iran and Iraq," he said. "If Iran makes the wrong choice, America will act to protect our interests and our troops and our Iraqi partners."

Although the Bush administration has yet to lay it out for the public, it says it has extensive evidence of Iran's financial and material support for extremist elements—known as Special Groups—inside the Mahdi Army.

Gen. David Petraeus said in testimony before Congress last week that the U.S. and its allies have captured the deputy commander of Lebanese Hezbollah Dept. 2800, which the administration believes is working with Iran to train, equip and direct the Special Groups.

Those groups also are believed to be responsible for the barrage of Iranian-made rockets—140 in a 13-day period—fired into the Green Zone, which houses the U.S. Embassy. That began just as fighting started in Basra.

The problem for the U.S., however, is that Iran seems to have its fingers in every pie in Iraq. In addition to its deep ties to the Mahdi Army and the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, or ISCI—a major Shiite party whose leaders spent decades in exile in Iran—it also is believed to be funding numerous smaller Shiite groups.

Crocker said Iran has a dialogue with "everyone ... not just the Shia community." unlike your stupidity....But speculation has been rife over a potential US conflict with Iran, which is pressing on with its nuclear activities despite three sets of UN sanctions over Iran's failure to heed repeated ultimatums to suspend uranium enrichment. US ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker has framed Iranian activities in Iraq as a "proxy war" with the Americans, even as administration officials have hailed the retreat of Al-Qaeda due to increasing involvement by Sunni tribal chiefs. Crocker on Friday foresaw a similar reaction in Iraq, saying that Iran's support for militias fighting the Iraqi government may cause a Shiite "backlash." "My sense is the harder they push, the more resistance they encounter," he said. Iran took a similar approach in Lebanon, but the stakes for Iran are much higher in Iraq than they ARE in Lebanon....

"In Lebanon, Iran was dabbling in Arab politics and forming a forward defense against Israel," said Vali Nasr, professor of international politics at Tufts University's Fletcher School. "But it was not central to Iran's national security in the way Iraq is. In Iraq, which is right next door, and with which it fought an eight-year war, it's a matter of controlling Iraq's fate and never letting it become a threat again."

But the Iranian regime's ultimate plans regarding its next-door neighbor, if it has any, remain difficult to discern. Tehran helped broker a truce between Sadr and ISCI last year, as well as the cease-fire that ended the fighting in Basra.

"Iran has a whole variety of competing interests in Iraq, and because they're a black box, people tend to ascribe strategic thinking to them when sometimes all they're doing is reacting," said Kenneth Pollack, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy.

Iraqi leaders squeezed by CIA

As a result, the Iraqi government, which welcomed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on a state visit last month, has found itself squeezed between its two key allies. Even as Iraqi leaders issued a statement Saturday condemning "foreign interference in Iraqi affairs," they have not appeared eager to confront Iran directly.

David Mack, a retired diplomat who served with Crocker in Beirut, sees a lot of "eerie parallels" with Lebanon, but said that even with the complicated sectarian violence in that country, Iraq is the far greater challenge.

"As hard as things were in Lebanon, Iraq is infinitely harder," Mack said. "[In Lebanon], the Iranians and the Syrians had influence over Hezbollah. But in Iraq they have it over the central government as well."

Imad Moustapha, Syria's ambassador to the U.S., called the accusations of heavy involvement by Iran and his country "yet more falsehoods and lies." In a phone interview he said, "The U.S. administration assigns blame to everyone else, when they are the ones playing a sinister role in Iraq, arming 18 different Sunni tribes."

The ultimate lesson of the Lebanon parallel, according to Crocker, is that how the U.S. leaves is as important as how it got in.

After the bombings in 1983 of the U.S. Embassy and of a U.S. Marines barracks in Beirut, the U.S. withdrew all its forces from Lebanon. And despite his own close calls in recent weeks, Crocker advises against following that same strategy today.

"I was in Lebanon in the early 1980s, and when we withdrew our Marines … countries in the region made some judgments about what the United States was willing to do," he said. "Iran, ISRAEL and Syria, in particular, made LOTS OF judgments. And those … PRODUCED ALLIANCES.....WHICH continue to form their actions today, over a quarter of a century later." YA HAMEER KBAR....AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BE ALLIED UNTIL THE USA IS DEFEATED IN THE AREA.....
